Texas Surges to 3rd Place with 2-1 Win Over Ads

The 3-in-3 weekend sweep is complete for the Texas Stars. After the games in Lake Erie, it was hard to believe that Texas would be in this place on Sunday night. However with tonight's win, the Stars are now in sole possession of 3rd place in the West Division with 70 points, placing them just one point behind Milwaukee and Houston, both tied at 71.

The Stars opened up the scoring in this one with a rebound goal in the first period. Brandon Segal, who spent four years in an Admirals uniform, put the original shot on net, where Mathieu Tousignant collected his 8th of the year on the rebound. Jonathan Blum answered back on the power play just six minutes later. Texas had been on the power play themselves but took themselves off with a poorly timed hooking call. Texas did this twice in the first period, but it only bit them once. Shots were in Milwaukee's favor 16-10 in the period.

Sean Backman made up for his hooking call in the first with a power play goal in the second. His one-timer from the right wing circle gave Texas the 2-1 lead seven minutes into the period. Brandon Segal collected his second point of the night with the primary assist. As is typical in Ads/Stars matchups, that would be all the scoring that was needed.

Texas held on through a penalty kill at the end of the game and an extended 6-on-5 set for the Ads. Beskorowany stopped 34 of 35 shots against for the Stars after being called up yesterday to secure the win.

This is Texas Stars hockey: solid goaltending, timely scoring, and stout special teams. The importance of the weekend sweep cannot be overstated. The Stars have moved from 6th place all the way to 3rd. With Houston's 59 games played, technically, the Stars are in second by points percentage. Up next is Peoria, a team on a three game losing skid, on Wednesday.
