Can you say colossal win? Tonight, the Texas Stars could and did. Texas handed Peter Mannino his first loss of any kind since January 6th and only his fourth loss of the season overall with a shootout win over Chicago. Two of Mannino's four losses on his 23-3-1 record have come against Texas. This was a statement win for the Texas Stars. Yes, someone can beat the Chicago Wolves: your Texas Stars.
Texas opened the scoring in the 2nd period after bombing the net with shots in the first. The first period shot total was 16-6 in favor of Texas. Warren Peters scored just 4 minutes into the second on a power play shot that deflected in off Mannino's gear. Peters did it again seven minutes later when he got the homerun pass from Dan Jancevski and beat Mannino with a wrist shot glove side high. Before the end of the period though, Chicago would score on Krahn to bring it to 2-1. Texas again beat Chicago on shots in the period at 13-7 and was leading overall after two at 29-13.
The Wolves claimed the next two goals of the night, from Paul Postma and Matt Anderson. Then, Texas did something quite extraordinary: they didn't lose. The Stars managed to tie the game to take us to the extra period. Again, Warren Peters got a pass to the crease where Ray Sawada put it home to tie us at three.
The Stars and Wolves skated to a tie after overtime and went to a shootout. Texas brought Sceviour, Graham, Lindgren, Gagnon, and Peters (duh) against Mannino. The Stars' first and last shooters scored while Brent Krahn stopped four of the five Chicago attempts.
Warren Peters had one heck of a night. He scored the first two goals of the night, setup the third, and scored the game-winning shootout goal. I had included Warren on my list of players who were not doing so well last week for the Texas Stars Report, but there are certainly signs of life tonight in the young centerman.
Elsewhere in the AHL, Peoria lost to Rockford 4-3 as well tonight. This brings Texas's magic number to 4 to clinch the playoffs but keeps the IceHogs only one point back of the Stars in the West Division. Texas can now clinch a playoff berth as early as tomorrow if the Stars can win at Grand Rapids and Peoria loses to Houston in any way (L/OTL/SOL). Rockford can also clinch tomorrow. In addition to their own win and a Peoria regulation loss, they would also require a San Antonio loss of any kind against Lake Erie.
